President William Ruto has urged the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to help combat climate change, which he identified as the biggest threat to the country’s development and prosperity. Speaking at a pass-out parade for KDF officers in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, the President expressed confidence in the military’s ability to tackle climate change.

He asked the KDF to collaborate with the Ministry of Environment to implement the 15 billion tree-planting program. President Ruto pointed out that recent floods in the country, resulting in loss of lives and property, were a consequence of climate change. He praised the KDF for their effective disaster response during the floods.

The President also commended the KDF for its iconic peacekeeping role, which enhances Kenya’s capacity to face complex regional and global diplomatic and security challenges. He assured the KDF of the government’s unwavering support and commitment to enhancing their capabilities and promoting their welfare.

President Ruto led a one-minute moment of silence in memory of the late Chief of Defence Forces General Francis Ogolla and the officers who died with him in a military helicopter crash last month. He highlighted General Ogolla’s legacy as an inspiration for many in the military and public service.
