Houthi Attack Kills 3 Mariners in Red Sea Escalation

Yemen’s Houthi rebels killed three mariners in a deadly Red Sea attack, marking a significant escalation in the Iran-backed group’s maritime campaign. The European naval force confirmed the fatalities following the assault on a cargo vessel navigating the strategic waterway.

The attack represents the first confirmed deaths from Houthi strikes in recent months, raising alarm about intensifying threats to international shipping. The Red Sea serves as a crucial trade route, carrying approximately 12% of global commerce between Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Houthi forces have launched dozens of attacks on commercial vessels since October, claiming solidarity with Palestinians amid the Gaza conflict. The group has targeted ships they allege have connections to Israel, the United States, or Britain, though many vessels have no clear links to these nations.

The European naval force, part of Operation Aspides, monitors shipping lanes and provides protection for merchant vessels. Military officials have not released details about the specific ship targeted or the attack method used.

This deadly incident could trigger stronger international responses to protect maritime traffic. Several major shipping companies have already rerouted vessels around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope, adding weeks to delivery times and increasing costs.

The Houthis control significant portions of Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, and receive weapons and support from Iran according to Western intelligence agencies.
