Wike Responds to Supreme Court Ruling on Edo Governorship Election
Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has responded to the Supreme Court’s decision upholding Governor Monday Okpebholo’s victory in Edo State’s September 2024 governorship election.
The Supreme Court affirmed Okpebholo’s electoral win, settling months of legal disputes following the contentious gubernatorial race. Wike’s reaction came through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, in a Thursday statement.
“Now we know who won the election,” Wike declared, acknowledging the court’s final verdict on the disputed poll. The minister’s response suggests acceptance of the judicial determination after prolonged uncertainty surrounding the election results.
The September 2024 Edo governorship election sparked significant controversy, with multiple parties challenging the outcome through Nigeria’s court system. The case progressed through various judicial levels before reaching the Supreme Court, the country’s highest legal authority.
Okpebholo’s victory confirmation ends the legal battle that kept Edo State’s political landscape uncertain for several months. The Supreme Court’s judgment represents the final word on the electoral dispute, as no further appeals are possible under Nigeria’s legal framework.
The ruling reinforces Nigeria’s judicial system’s role in resolving electoral conflicts and provides clarity for Edo State’s governance moving forward. Political observers viewed the case as a test of the country’s democratic institutions and electoral dispute resolution mechanisms.
