Wike Calls for Unity After Supreme Court Affirms Okpebholo’s Victory in Edo State

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has urged political opponents to unite behind Governor Monday Okpebholo following the Supreme Court’s decisive ruling on the disputed Edo State governorship election.

The Supreme Court affirmed Okpebholo as the legitimate winner of the September 2024 gubernatorial contest, ending months of legal challenges that threatened political stability in the state. Wike praised the apex court’s judgment in an official statement released through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media.

The FCT Minister emphasized the importance of moving beyond electoral divisions to focus on governance and development. His call for reconciliation comes as Edo State prepares to address pressing issues including infrastructure development, security challenges, and economic growth under Okpebholo’s administration.

The September 2024 election had generated significant controversy, with opposition parties challenging the results through various court levels. The Supreme Court’s verdict represents the final legal resolution of the electoral dispute, clearing the path for unified governance in the oil-rich state.

Wike’s statement reflects broader efforts within Nigeria’s political establishment to promote stability and cooperation across party lines. The minister’s intervention carries particular weight given his influence within the Peoples Democratic Party and his current federal appointment.

Governor Okpebholo now faces the challenge of building consensus among former rivals while delivering on campaign promises to Edo State’s approximately 4 million residents.
