VP Shettima: I Was 'Most Demonised' Under Jonathan's Presidency

VP Shettima Recalls Jonathan’s Attempt to Remove Him as Governor

Vice President Kashim Shettima revealed Thursday that former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration attempted to remove him as Borno State governor during Nigeria’s deadly Boko Haram crisis. The disclosure marks a rare public account of political tensions during one of Nigeria’s most challenging security periods.

Speaking in Abuja on July 10, 2025, Shettima described himself as the “most demonised” political figure under Jonathan’s presidency. The alleged removal attempt occurred while Borno State faced devastating attacks from Boko Haram terrorists, who had declared the northeastern region their stronghold.

Shettima served as Borno governor from 2011 to 2019, overseeing the state during the insurgency’s deadliest phase. Thousands of civilians died in terrorist attacks, while millions fled their homes across the region. The security crisis dominated Jonathan’s presidency and contributed to his 2015 election defeat.

The Vice President’s claims highlight the complex political dynamics that emerged during Nigeria’s fight against terrorism. Federal and state governments often clashed over security strategies and resource allocation during the crisis.

Jonathan’s administration faced widespread criticism for its handling of the Boko Haram insurgency, particularly after the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls kidnapping. The incident drew international attention and sparked the #BringBackOurGirls campaign.

Shettima now serves as Vice President under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, which took office in May 2023. His revelation adds new perspective to Nigeria’s turbulent political history during the terrorism crisis.
