Ukrainian troops have successfully downed a Russian Su-25 fighter jet over the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk, Donetsk, while a drone strike ignited an oil depot in the southern Russian region of Rostov.
The Su-25, known by NATO as the “Frogfoot,” was shot down while engaging Ukrainian forces. Footage released by Ukraine’s 28th Brigade shows the aircraft bursting into flames mid-air before crashing to the ground.
Simultaneously, a drone strike in Rostov set one of Vladimir Putin’s oil depots ablaze. The strike also reportedly destroyed three Russian tanks at the site. Vasily Golubev, the regional governor, confirmed via Telegram that there were no casualties and that firefighters were working to extinguish the blaze.
Moscow has vowed to continue its military operations in Ukraine, dismissing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s suggestion that Kyiv is submitting a plan to Washington on ending the war. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated, “We are aware of the nature of this Kyiv regime. We are continuing our special military operation and will achieve all of our goals.”
These developments come amidst Ukraine’s reported seizure of approximately 500 square miles of Russian territory, including 100 settlements in the Kursk region, and the capture of 594 prisoners of war. In response, Russia has launched its largest air attack since the war began, deploying over 200 drones and missiles against Ukraine in recent days.
On Tuesday, two people were killed in the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih when a hotel was destroyed, and two others died in drone attacks on Zaporizhzhia in southern Ukraine. Marcel Plichta, a former analyst at the US Department of Defense, suggested that the timing of these strikes is not coincidental, noting that they often follow Ukrainian military successes.
President Zelensky has pledged retaliation, stating, “We will undoubtedly respond to Russia for this and all other attacks. Crimes against humanity cannot go unpunished.” He also confirmed that Western-supplied F-16 fighter jets were used to intercept some of the Russian missiles, urging Western countries to provide more of these aircraft.
Meanwhile, Moscow officials claim that Ukrainian troops attempted another cross-border attack into Belgorod, a region bordering Kursk. Belgorod’s regional governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, described the situation as “difficult but under control,” claiming that hundreds of Ukrainian troops attacked at least one checkpoint. This claim has not been independently verified, and Kyiv has not commented.
