Trump Announces 50% Tariff on Brazilian Goods, Demands Bolsonaro Trial End

Trump Threatens Brazil with 50% Tariff Over Tech Disputes and Bolsonaro Trial

President Donald Trump announced plans to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods, dramatically escalating tensions between the United States and South America’s largest economy. The threat marks Trump’s most aggressive trade action against Brazil to date.

Trump revealed the tariff plan through a letter shared on social media, accusing Brazil of launching “attacks” on American technology companies. The proposed 50% tax would significantly impact bilateral trade between the two nations, which exceeded $40 billion annually in recent years.

The tariff threat comes alongside Trump’s demand that Brazil end legal proceedings against former President Jair Bolsonaro. Trump’s letter reportedly links the trade penalties to Brazil’s handling of Bolsonaro’s ongoing trials, mixing economic policy with political intervention.

Brazilian officials have not yet responded to Trump’s ultimatum. The country’s current leadership under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has maintained different policies toward tech regulation compared to the previous Bolsonaro administration.

Trade experts warn that a 50% tariff could disrupt supply chains for Brazilian commodities including soybeans, coffee, and steel. American consumers would likely face higher prices on these imported goods.

The threat represents Trump’s continued use of tariffs as diplomatic leverage, following similar tactics employed against China, Mexico, and European allies during his presidency. Brazil’s response could determine whether negotiations prevent the tariffs from taking effect.
