Transport operators in Ghana have clarified that there is no increase in public transport fares, urging the public to disregard recent media reports claiming a 15 percent hike.
In a press release issued today, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) condemned the reports as misleading, suggesting that they could be part of a deliberate effort to stir discontent among commuters.
“Our attention has been drawn to news going around in some media houses headlined ‘Transport Operators announce 15% increase in fares effective 2nd November,’” the statement read.
“We wish to place on record and for the information of drivers and the general public that no such decision has been taken, and neither the GPRTU nor the GRTCC have negotiated for any fare increments.”
The press release, signed by GPRTU General Secretary Godfred Abulbire and GRTCC General Secretary Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, expressed concern that these inaccurate claims may be driven by individuals aiming to create confusion within the transport sector and among the public.
The organizations called for calm, emphasising that no fare changes are scheduled for the foreseeable future.
Transport operators have called on all members to adhere to the existing fare structure and work with the Station Welfare Committees to ensure compliance.
They reassured commuters of their commitment to transparency, highlighting that accurate information is crucial to maintain public trust.
