A devastating crash near Wakefield has claimed the lives of six individuals, including two young girls. The local MP described the incident as “devastating.”
The fatal accident occurred on Sunday afternoon when a car collided with a motorbike on the A61 between Staincross, Barnsley, and Newmillerdam, Wakefield. The two girls, a woman, and a man traveling in the Ford Focus, as well as the motorcyclist and pillion passenger, tragically lost their lives at the scene.
West Yorkshire Police rushed to the site near Mapplewell after receiving an alert at 3.54pm. They described the incident as “absolutely tragic.” Photos from the aftermath reveal a burnt-out, mangled car on a grass verge, with debris scattered across the road.
The A61 remains closed between Shaw Lane and Warren Lane for an ongoing investigation. The road is expected to stay closed for some time.
Barnsley North MP and Security Minister Dan Jarvis expressed his condolences, saying, “Devastating news. My heartfelt condolences go to the family and friends of those who have tragically lost their lives.”
Superintendent Alan Travis of Wakefield District Police stated, “This is an absolutely tragic incident which has resulted in the loss of six lives. Our thoughts are with the families of those who have died, and we are working to provide support at this time.”
