Third Suspect Charged in Murder of 17-Year-Old Refugee Girl

A third suspect now faces murder charges in connection with the death of 17-year-old refugee Gaala Adan in Wajir County. The Director of Public Prosecutions filed charges against Mussa Sheikh at Garissa High Court on Thursday.

Principal Prosecution Counsel Bernard Owour told the court that Sheikh allegedly murdered Adan jointly with other suspects already facing charges. The victim, a refugee girl, was reportedly killed on March 22, 2025, at Lolkuta South area in Wajir.

The case involves multiple defendants, though authorities have not disclosed the total number of suspects charged. Sheikh joins at least two other individuals previously brought before the court in connection with Adan’s death.

The murder occurred in Lolkuta South, an area within Wajir County that hosts refugee populations. Local authorities have not released details about the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death or the relationship between the suspects and victim.

The prosecution’s decision to charge a third suspect suggests the investigation remains active. Court proceedings will continue as the case moves through Kenya’s judicial system.

The charges represent the latest development in a case that has drawn attention to violence against vulnerable refugee populations in northeastern Kenya. The victim’s young age and refugee status have highlighted ongoing security concerns in the region.

Further court hearings will determine the next steps in the legal proceedings against all charged suspects.
