“Ukraine needs more air defense systems,” Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said. December 20, 2024, 3:24 AM LONDON — A Russian missile strike killed one person and wounded nine others early on Friday morning, Ukrainian officials said, an attack that U.S. Ambassador Bridget A. Brink described as “brutal.” “Early this morning Russia launched a ballistic missile attack against the capital, killing a civilian and resulting in debris and fires around the city,” Brink said in a statement on social media. Brink added that the United States and its partners were “surging security assistance and energy support” to the country “in response to these brutal attacks.” A view shows buildings damaged during a Russian missile strike, amid Russia’s attack on Ukraine, in Kyiv, Ukraine, Dec. 20, 2024. LONDON — The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv temporarily closed its doors on Wednesday out of “an abundance of caution,” as it warned that a potentially “significant” air strike may be coming. “The U.S. Embassy recommends U.S. citizens be prepared to immediately shelter in the event an air alert is announced,” the embassy said in an update. LONDON — The showdown between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump will in many ways be a choice between foreign policy continuity and change. Harris has largely stuck to President Joe Biden’s world agenda, one in which the outgoing leader sought to revive traditional American statesmanship after four turbulent years of Trump. Biden’s time in office, though, has seen a major deterioration in global stability. The next president will come to power in the midst of two major wars — one in Europe and one in the Middle East — in which the U.S. is deeply involved. Trump is bidding for a second term with twin promises of “America first” with “peace through strength,” accusing Biden, Harris and many other leaders of facilitating global instability through weakness

Nobel Prize in literature is awarded to South Korean author Han Kang

STOCKHOLM — South Korean author Han Kang was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature Thursday for a poetic and unsettling body of work that the Nobel committee said “confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life.” A slow-burning literary success who was won multiple awards in Korea and Europe, Han is the first Asian woman and the first South Korean writer to win the Nobel literature prize. Nobel committee chairman Anders Olsson praised Han’s “physical empathy for the vulnerable, often female lives” of her characters, in novels such as “The Vegetarian” and “Human Acts.” “She has a unique awareness of the connections between body and soul, the living and the dead,” Olsson said. Nobel literature committee member Anna-Karin Palm said Han writes “intense lyrical prose that is both
