An 87-year-old woman in South Korea is set to enroll in university after graduating from high school this week, seven years after returning to school. Kim Gap-nyeo graduated from Ilsung Women’s High School, an institution for adults in Seoul, on Feb. 25 and will begin studying Social Welfare at Sookmyung Women’s University this month. “A goal? I don’t have one. I just enjoy learning and being with people,” she said in an interview with Korea Times. Kim’s story gained national attention after she appeared on the popular TV show “You Quiz on the Block” on the

One week after Donald Trump took office again as American President, Kha Van received an email from her school explaining how to deal with U.S. immigration and customs authorities. Like other Vietnamese students and their foreign friends in the U.S., she is now overwhelmed by the feeling of uncertainty, one that has prevented them from doing regular stuff such as finding a part-time job or planning a summer vacation back at home. “My school sent an email to students telling us what to do when encountering Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) when going to school, what to say and how to behave when ICE enters our school, to defend our rights, as ICE can stomp into our school anytime to arrest someone,” she said. She said many schools in the

Why did so many Jewish organizations buy into the DEI scam?

Even in its earliest forms, DEI was never really about the literal meaning of the three words, “Diversity,” “Equity” and “Inclusion.” By DAVID BERNSTEIN, PHIL SIEGEL FEBRUARY 14, 2025 18:15 Group, business people and hands in stack for teamwork, collaboration or diversity in workplace community. (photo credit: SHUTTERSTOCK) Jewish Insider recently reported that “Jewish groups are now divided on their embrace of the DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) framework — but nearly all recognize shortcomings in the ideology.” They know that DEI as commonly practiced is deeply flawed but don’t want to alienate allies by opposing it or miss the opportunity to sensitize institutions to antisemitism.  So, in order to get the Jewish narrative heard, they often reconcile themselves to a faulty scheme. It’s time that they ask themselves some

The education policy that could make a difference

The education policy that could make a difference

Thursday, February 13, 2025 By Bjorn Lomborg  Kids’ educational test scores are a major cause for concern across the world. Learning plummeted nearly everywhere during the Covid pandemic—but even before that, standardized test result measures in mathematics, science and reading were heading in the wrong direction. Education truly unites parents across the world, although the level of challenge differs, with American and rich world results stagnating at relatively high levels, whereas children in the world’s poorer half struggle with even reading a simple sentence or doing basic math. But after years of experience, it has become clear which policies don’t work at all—even if they have loud backers. Increasing per pupil spending sounds like a no-brainer, but it can deliver little or no learning at all if the money isn’t used wisely. India showed this when

Middle Schooler Discovers Cancer-Fighting Compound in Goose Droppings

Camarria Williams, a Chicago middle schooler, has uncovered a cancer-fighting compound in goose poop. The droppings that the 13-year-old collected contained a novel compound that scientists at the University of Illinois Chicago found to be toxic to human skin and ovarian cancer cells. STEM Program For Underserved Communities Williams made the discovery while attending the Chicago Antibiotic Discovery Lab—a 14-week STEM outreach program at the Boys and Girls Club in partnership with the University of Illinois Chicago. In a class assignment, she learned how to isolate bacteria and program a robot to catalog and track antimicrobial activity. She was drawn to the program for its unique hands-on experiences for local STEM students. “We walked around and they had these chemicals, and they were working on something. It was just fun,”

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Arkansas’ Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders and California’s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom have little in common ideologically, but the two have both been vocal supporters of an idea that’s been rapidly gaining bipartisan ground in the states: Students’ cellphones need to be banned during the school day. At least eight states have enacted such bans over the past two years, and proposals are being considered in several more states this year. Here is a look at the push by states for such bans. The push for cellphone bans has been driven by concerns about the impact screen time has on children’s mental health and complaints from teachers that cellphones have become a constant distraction in the classroom. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, who has called on
