Presidency Disputes Former SGF’s Claims About Tinubu’s Role in Buhari’s 2015 Election Win
The Nigerian Presidency has publicly challenged statements made by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Boss Mustapha regarding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s contribution to former President Muhammadu Buhari’s landmark 2015 electoral victory.
Mustapha reportedly downplayed Tinubu’s role in securing Buhari’s historic win against incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan. The 2015 election marked the first time an opposition candidate defeated a sitting president in Nigeria’s democratic history.
The Presidency’s response suggests disagreement over the extent of Tinubu’s influence in the All Progressives Congress (APC) coalition that brought Buhari to power. Tinubu, then APC national leader, was widely credited with building the political alliance that united opposition parties against the ruling People’s Democratic Party.
The dispute highlights ongoing tensions within Nigeria’s ruling party regarding credit for the 2015 victory. Tinubu’s supporters have long argued that his political machinery and financial resources were crucial to Buhari’s success, particularly in securing southwestern Nigeria’s votes.
Boss Mustapha served as Buhari’s chief of staff from 2017 to 2023, giving him inside knowledge of the administration’s operations. His recent comments appear to have struck a nerve with the current Presidency, which took office in May 2023.
The disagreement reflects broader discussions about political loyalty and recognition within Nigeria’s complex political landscape as various figures claim credit for transformative electoral moments.
