Kano Police Investigate Violent Clash Between Rival Emir Supporters
The Kano State Police Command has launched a formal investigation into violent clashes between supporters of two rival emirs in Nigeria’s ancient city of Kano. The confrontation erupted in the Kofar-Kudu area between loyalists of deposed 15th Emir Aminu Ado Bayero and supporters of reinstated 16th Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.
Police spokesman SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa confirmed the establishment of an investigative panel to examine the incident. The clash represents the latest escalation in Kano’s ongoing emirate dispute, which has divided the northern Nigerian state along political and traditional lines.
The violence stems from a complex succession battle that has gripped Kano for months. Emir Sanusi II was originally dethroned and later reinstated, while Emir Bayero had briefly assumed the traditional leadership role before his own removal from power.
Kano’s emirate holds significant cultural and religious importance across northern Nigeria’s predominantly Muslim population. The traditional ruler influences local governance and serves as a spiritual leader for millions of residents.
The police investigation aims to identify those responsible for the violence and prevent further clashes between the competing factions. Authorities have not yet released details about casualties or property damage from the Kofar-Kudu confrontation.
The emirate dispute continues to create tension in Kano, Nigeria’s second-largest city, as both sides maintain claims to the centuries-old traditional throne.
