KNUST Launches Training Program to Boost Ghana’s Poultry Industry
Ghana’s poultry sector faces a critical challenge that threatens its growth potential. The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Animal Science Department has launched a specialized training program to address the country’s lack of commercial breeding companies.
The department head expressed serious concerns about Ghana’s absence of established commercial poultry breeding operations. This gap forces local farmers to rely heavily on imported breeding stock, increasing production costs and reducing industry competitiveness.
The new training initiative targets agricultural professionals and potential entrepreneurs in the poultry sector. Participants will learn advanced breeding techniques, genetic selection methods, and commercial poultry management practices. The program aims to develop local expertise capable of establishing sustainable breeding companies within Ghana.
Ghana’s poultry industry currently imports most of its breeding materials from international suppliers. This dependency creates supply chain vulnerabilities and limits farmers’ ability to develop breeds suited to local conditions. The training program seeks to build domestic capacity for producing high-quality breeding stock.
The initiative represents a strategic move to strengthen Ghana’s food security and agricultural self-sufficiency. By developing local breeding expertise, the country can reduce import dependencies while creating employment opportunities in the agricultural sector.
KNUST’s program aligns with Ghana’s broader agricultural development goals. The university expects the training to produce qualified professionals who will establish commercial breeding operations, ultimately transforming the nation’s poultry production landscape.
