Israel conducted an airstrike on southern Beirut, Lebanon’s capital, on Tuesday, targeting a senior Hezbollah commander allegedly responsible for recent attacks on Israeli civilians. The strike, which killed one woman and injured several others, has heightened tensions in the region and raised concerns about potential escalation.

The Israeli military claimed the attack was in response to a rocket strike on the occupied Golan Heights last Saturday, which resulted in the deaths of twelve children and young people. The target of the airstrike was reportedly Fuad Shukr, also known as al-Hajj Mohsin, a senior advisor on military affairs to Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the success of the operation. While the Israeli military claims Mr. Shukr was killed, describing him as “the most senior military commander in Hezbollah” and the militia leader’s “right-hand man,” Hezbollah sources assert that he survived the attack.

Lebanon’s public health ministry confirmed one fatality and multiple injuries resulting from the strike. Hezbollah-affiliated media reported that 31 wounded individuals were taken to local hospitals for treatment.

The airstrike appears to have defied diplomatic efforts to limit escalation. U.S. officials and other diplomats had urged Israel to avoid targeting Beirut, particularly its southern suburbs, which form Hezbollah’s stronghold. However, the Israeli military confirmed they had targeted southern Beirut in a statement posted on social media.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant commented on the situation, stating, “Hezbollah crossed the red line.” This sentiment was echoed by the Israeli military, which emphasized its readiness to transition from defense to offense along its northern border if necessary.

The strike follows a pattern of increased hostilities in the region since Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,000 Israeli casualties and 251 hostages. Hezbollah has been continuously firing into Israel since then, raising concerns about a potential two-front war.

Prior to the airstrike, Hezbollah had rejected calls from international mediators to avoid retaliating against any Israeli attack. A Hezbollah official stated that the group takes Israel’s threats seriously and is prepared to respond, although they do not expect a ground invasion.

As tensions continue to escalate, the international community remains concerned about the potential for further violence and the impact on regional stability.
