Hopeson Adorye, a prominent member of the Movement for Change, faced charges for publishing false news on Thursday morning (May 23, 2024) at the Dansoman Circuit Court in Accra. His arrest occurred a day prior.
Adorye, escorted by armed police officers, appeared in court in handcuffs. He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was subsequently granted bail at GH¢20,000. The bail terms require two sureties, one of whom must be justified.
Presiding judge Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit approved the bail following an application by a seven-lawyer team led by Yaw Buaben Asamoa. The lawyers assured the court that Adorye would not interfere with the ongoing investigations.
The false news charges stem from Adorye’s recent radio interview, where he alleged that dynamite explosions in the Volta Region before the 2016 elections aimed to discourage voters in opposition strongholds.
In court, Adorye engaged in a verbal exchange with a policeman, which was captured on video. As the police escorted him out of the headquarters, Adorye attempted to speak with his lawyer, Ken Kuranchie. The policeman intervened, prompting Adorye to protest, “I am talking to my lawyer, please, I am talking to my lawyer, and then you are preventing me. What is the meaning of that? Are you the only police officer?”
