FCT Minister Wike Orders Mass Evacuation of Street Elements from Abuja

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has ordered the immediate removal of street beggars, illegal traders, and suspected criminals from Abuja. The directive targets scavengers, one-chance robbery syndicates, and other criminal elements operating across Nigeria’s capital city.

Wike announced the evacuation order on Wednesday through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka. The minister’s statement emphasizes a zero-tolerance approach to street-level criminal activities that have plagued Abuja residents.

The comprehensive operation will focus on removing various groups from public spaces. Street beggars who solicit money from motorists and pedestrians face immediate evacuation. Illegal traders operating without proper permits will also be cleared from unauthorized locations.

The directive specifically mentions one-chance syndicates, criminal groups that rob passengers in fake commercial vehicles. These operations have become a significant security concern for Abuja commuters in recent months.

Wike’s order extends to scavengers who collect recyclable materials from streets and dump sites. The minister appears determined to transform Abuja’s public image by removing all unauthorized street activities.

The evacuation represents part of broader efforts to enhance security and urban planning in the FCT. Local authorities will reportedly coordinate the operation across all six area councils within Abuja.

This development follows growing public complaints about increased criminal activities and unauthorized street trading in Nigeria’s capital territory.
