The opening day of Euro 2024 witnessed Switzerland, Spain, and reigning champions Italy securing victories. Switzerland triumphed 3-1 over Hungary, while Spain had a comfortable 3-0 win against Croatia. Italy, despite dominating the statistics, managed a 2-1 win against Albania.
Italy 2, Albania 1
Despite the close scoreline, Italy was largely dominant. They should have scored a third goal after a quick start, but their two early goals were enough to hold off Albania. Nedim Bajrami scored the fastest goal in men’s European Championship history after just 23 seconds, capitalizing on Italy’s poor throw-in.
Italy quickly responded with goals from Alessandro Bastoni and Nicolo Barella. They also hit the post and missed other opportunities, maintaining 69% possession and 17 shots to Albania’s eight. Riccardo Calafiori, alongside Bastoni, delivered an impressive performance, keeping Albania at bay.
Spain 3, Croatia 0
Experience didn’t help Croatia as Spain, led by Barcelona’s 16-year-old star Lamine Yamal, secured a 3-0 victory. Spain scored all their goals in the first half, converting 60% of their shots on target. Alvaro Morata, Fabian Ruiz, and Dani Carvajal scored for Spain, while Croatia, despite having 16 shots, lacked precision.
Ruiz, who assisted the first goal, was the standout performer. Spain’s young squad entered the tournament with questions but showed they are serious contenders. However, an injury to Morata could be a concern.
Switzerland 3, Hungary 1
Switzerland controlled the game, leading 2-0 through Kwadwo Duah and Michel Aebischer’s international debut goals. Barnabas Varga’s header brought Hungary back into the game, but an error led to Breel Embolo’s goal, securing Switzerland’s victory.
The win is crucial for Switzerland, as a draw against Scotland could be enough to reach the knockout stage. At Euro 2020, all teams with four points advanced to the last 16.
