Embracer Group, a restructured Swedish gaming conglomerate, plans to use AI models to enhance game production significantly. According to the company’s annual report, this new AI policy aims to improve resource efficiency, add intelligent behaviors, personalization, and optimization to gameplay experiences.

Embracer believes that harnessing AI will create more engaging and personalized gaming experiences. They see potential in using AI for game development speed, logistics, and planning. The company acknowledges the risks associated with AI but believes it will empower employees to create more powerful experiences in less time.

Embracer, which let go of over 1,500 employees and canceled 80 projects last year, warns that not utilizing AI for relevant tasks could lead to competitors outpacing them.

The company is subject to general and specific laws regarding AI development and use, which require comprehensive documentation, risk assessments, and continuous updates.

The company acknowledges that AI can produce unethical, biased, or incorrect results if not properly trained or used for unintended purposes.

Embracer also notes that AI-generated material is not patentable or copyrightable, necessitating a clear understanding of how material is produced, especially by third parties, to avoid copyright or intellectual property issues.

Embracer reassures that AI models will not replace human workers. Instead, they are taking a human-centric approach to technology, which could potentially open doors for new hires. Tomas Hedman, Embracer’s head of privacy and AI governance, states that AI could make coding accessible to a broader group of developers, including those with disabilities.

Hedman emphasizes the need for a risk-aware approach due to the potential pitfalls of AI models. He explains that AI trained on historical data can lead to imbalanced automated decision-making.

As AI models become more powerful, they can be leveraged in the creative process, such as identifying inconsistencies in scripts and storytelling, benefiting creative teams in scriptwriting, image creation, idea generation, quality control, and more.

Embracer joins other gaming companies like EA, Sony, Square Enix, and Ubisoft in exploring the potential of AI in game development.
