NEW YORK — Abdullah Mason put a frightening beating on Manuel Jaimes, knocking out a game but outgunned fighter who had just gone the distance with Rolando Romero. Mason put Jaimes down four times in four rounds before referee David Fields stopped their eight-round scheduled lightweight fight at the 1:55 mark. The fight was on the preliminary undercard of Denys Berinchyk-Keyshawn Davis at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. While Mason’s last bout in November was among the best brief shootouts in recent history – a two-round win over Yohan Vasquez in which both men hit the canvas – this match was mostly one-way traffic in favor of the 20-year-old Mason, who is now 17-0 (15 KOs). Leigh Wood is relishing the prospect of his career reinvention being tested by Anthony Cacace on May 10. The former WBA featherweight champion moves up to junior lightweight at the Nottingham Arena and will be fighting for the first time under his new promoter, Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions. Ireland’s Cacace, 36, won the IBF title when a year earlier he stopped Joe Cordina. He then defeated Josh Warrington – among Wood’s previous victims – in what is expected to prove Warrington’s final fight. Wood-Cacace has the potential to prove transformative for the winner’s career, but in his home city of Nottingham, England, Wood, inactive since his victory over Warrington in October 2023 owing to the uncertainty surrounding his future that followed his departure from Matchroom, plans to continue to rebuild.
