In a stunning proposal, President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the U.S. will “take over” the Gaza Strip, “level the site” and rebuild it, after earlier saying Palestinians living there should leave. “They instead can occupy all of a beautiful area with homes and safety, and they can live out their lives in peace and harmony” in other areas or countries, he said at a news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “The U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it, too. We’ll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site. Level the site and get rid of the destroyed buildings. Level it out,” he said. “Create an economic development that

Fourteen figure skaters — including some young athletes called the “rising stars” of the sport — are among the victims of the first major commercial plane crash in the United States since 2009, officials said. The Skating Club of Boston was devastated by the crash, according to Doug Zeghibe, the club’s CEO and executive director, who said six of the victims were from the Boston club, including two coaches, two teenage athletes and two moms of athletes. “Our sport and this club have suffered a horrible loss with this tragedy,” Zeghibe said. “Skating is a tight-knit community where parents and kids come together six or seven days a week to train and work together. (Photo by Olympia DE MAISMONT / AFP) Junta-led countries Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso have officially withdrawn from the Economic Community of West African States. They officially exited West Africa’s main political and trade group on Wednesday after more than a year of diplomatic tensions. The withdrawal has shaken ECOWAS, which many consider to be the continent’s most important regional group and this year marks its 50th anniversary. While its leadership said in a statement that the group would “keep ECOWAS doors open” to the three countries, their departure has left the organisation’s future uncertain. The rupture was sparked by the July 2023 coup in Niger, after military
The Kwahu Traditional Council has reiterated that there is no dual paramountcy within the Kwahu Kingdom, following the destoolment of the former Kwahumanhene, Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II, and the installation of his successor. In a statement issued by the Council, the Akyeamehene of Kwahu, Nana Asiedu Kwabeng IV, stressed that Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II was formally removed from office on 19th October 2024 after violating the sacred oath he swore as Omanhene that “he will not eat red oil and smear our white cloth in it.” His actions, according to the Council, had “soiled our cloth with red oil that he has eaten.” Events leading to destoolment The statement said the destoolment process was triggered by a petition submitted to the government by Mr. Collins Darkwah Aboagye on September 12
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Tuesday she had been placed under judicial investigation following a government decision to release a Libyan police officer wanted by the International Criminal Court. Osama Elmasry Njeem was freed last week and flown home by an Italian state aircraft just days after being detained in the northern city of Turin under an ICC arrest warrant for alleged crimes against humanity, including murder, torture and rape. The ICC has demanded an explanation, saying it had not been consulted over the decision to let him go. Meloni said in a message posted on social media that she had been placed under investigation by Rome’s chief prosecutor, Francesco Le Voi, for allegedly aiding and abetting a crime and misuse of public funds. A female security guard working at Hercules Clinic in Pretoria was shot and injured during an attempt by robbers to access a nearby store on Sunday night. The city of Nagano in northern Japan is on high alert following a fatal stabbing near its main railway station last Wednesday, which left one person dead and three others injured. Despite the arrest of a suspect on Sunday, authorities are concerned about potential copycat attacks due to a series of threats. While acts of violence in Japan are still relatively rare, there has been a concerning increase in recent years, with one academic indicating it could point to deeper issues like isolation and mental health struggles. However, increased vigilance by schools and authorities reflects a growing awareness of these dangers. The Asahi newspaper reported that police and local education authorities received some email and phone threats, which they do not believe were sent by the alleged assailant, 46-year-old Yusuke
A teenager who stabbed two teachers and a pupil told police officers the attack was “one way to be a celebrity” as all eyes would be on her, a court has heard. The girl, who cannot be named, appeared at Swansea Crown Court on Monday charged with three counts of attempted murder at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, Carmarthenshire, in April last year. She admitted to the triple stabbing of Fiona Elias, Liz Hopkin and a pupil during morning break time at her school, but denied attempted murder. The jury also heard that the teenager shouted she was “going to kill” people in the school. The teenager repeatedly said “I’m going to kill you” as she first stabbed assistant head Ms Elias, and again when she attacked a pupil, the court heard.
A decision by a court in the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan to acquit a Chinese national accused of illegally mining tens of millions of dollars worth of gold has been questioned by legal experts, with one calling it an injustice for the affected community. Yu Hao was initially convicted in October by a lower court for mining without permits from February to May last year and was handed a jail term of three and a half years and a fine of 30 billion rupiah (US$1.9 million), lower than the prosecution’s request for five years’ imprisonment and a 50 billion rupiah fine to be imposed on Yu. Following an appeal by Yu, the Pontianak High Court on January 13 acquitted the defendant due to a lack of “valid and convincing
