One of the most coveted jobs in television is quickly becoming one of the hardest to keep filled. Taylor Tomlinson is the latest participant in a lengthening parade of comics and talk-show hosts who have decided that a perch in late-night TV is just not for them. Tomlinson announced Wednesday that she would leave the two-season-old “After Midnight” on CBS despite the offer of a third cycle this fall and the backing of Stephen Colbert, who hosts “The Late Show” an hour before her program airs. CBS, meanwhile, won’t cast about for someone new to lead her show’s 12:30 a.m. slot. She joins Trevor Noah and Roy Wood Jr. in a recent exodus of people who had won established positions in wee-hours programming but felt they could do better on

The new film is planned as a fresh adaptation of the Robert Heinlein tome, rather than a remake of the 1997 movie. Do you want to know more? Preview: Neill Blomkamp is tackling ‘Starship Troopers.’ He’ll adapt Robert Heinlein’s battle-happy 1959 novel. The story sees humanity threatened but insectoid aliens. While fans of South African filmmaker Neill Blomkamp might prefer him to keep working on a follow-up to cult hit ‘District 9,’ the director has other ideas. Having pumped out other projects and spent a frustrating period trying to get his chance at an ‘Alien’ movie, Blomkamp has now zeroed in on a new concept. Or rather, a new take on a previously-adapted book. According to
By Robert Scucci | Published 27 seconds ago The Humanity Bureau is a perfect example of how a solid idea bolstered by a strong cast can still fall flat if the screenplay has a massive identity crisis. While I can’t fault Nicolas Cage (who can?), Sarah Lind, or Jakob Davies for understanding the assignment, I can most certainly fault the assignment itself, which is a dystopian sci-fi thriller that’s sentimental and contemplative one second, but only before becoming a high-octane action outing that attempts to explore and unpack the existential crisis that’s found at its core. Though we’re talking about a single movie with a single overarching plot, each passing scene made me feel like I blacked out before coming to and finding myself watching an entirely different film on
Paramount Pictures Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rear Window” celebrates its 71st anniversary later this year, but rewatching it in March 2025, the movie plays differently than it ever has before. If you’ve never seen it, or you need a refresher on the plot, the film stars James Stewart as a photographer who’s broken his leg and is confined to his New York City apartment while he recovers. Bored out of his mind after having been there for weeks, he starts looking out his window and spying on his neighbors, only to notice some one of them participate in some … suspicious activity, and he becomes obsessed with figuring out what’s really going on. Watching the film again this week, I was struck by how many similarities there are to what we’re experiencing now. The
What would movies be about if not for love? Since well before the days of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in “Casablanca,” romance has driven countless classic stories, setting up some of the highest highs in cinematic history to follow. Be it Cary Grant and Grace Kelly seeing stars in “To Catch a Thief” or Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal disturbing diner patrons in “When Harry Met Sally,” the 20th century was chock full of iconic romances that helped humanity fall in love with the movies. Of course, those titles were dominated by white artists telling largely heteronormative tales — meaning many (but not all) of the best and most inclusive romances have arrived this millennium. Now, the best romance movies of the 21st century both resonate and surprise, showing
Hulu’s new limited series “Good American Family” is reigniting interest in the story of Natalia Grace — who was accused of lying about her age by her adopted family. Grace was born Sept. 4, 2003 in Ukraine with spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, a form of dwarfism that affects bone development. She was adopted in 2010 by Kristine and Michael Barnett, played by Ellen Pompeo and Mark Duplass in the new show, who also have three sons of their own (including one with autism). It didn’t take long for the Barnett couple to begin suspecting that Grace wasn’t being upfront about her age, later claiming they noticed pubic hair growing and adult teeth. They went to an Indiana court and made them change her legal birth year from 2003 to 1989. They also

Roommates, eh? Can’t live with them, can’t plot to murder them in their sleep. But it would appear that Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell are looking to move in together cinematically, as, according to reporter Jeff Sneider, the two popular actors are considering
By Chris Snellgrove | Published 40 seconds ago One of the reasons that the horror genre often feels stale is that bored directors have run out of new ways to surprise us. After all, how scary can something be when you can always guess everything that’s going to happen? If you want some spooky twists from a man you can never fully predict, you’re in luck: M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap is now streaming on Netflix. Trap On Netflix Before you stream Trap on Netflix, you should know it has a deliciously simplified plot involving a man taking his daughter to a concert featuring her favorite singer. Unfortunately, the entire event is a massive police operation intended to trap a ruthless serial killer. And since that killer happens to be dear

Director Carl Erik Rinsch has been indicted on charges of fraud and money laundering for allegedly taking $11 million from Netflix and spending it on luxury cars, antique furniture and mattresses. Rinsch demanded the funds in order to finish “White Horse,” a science fiction TV series that was never completed, according to the indictment. Instead, he allegedly used the money to make “extremely risky investments,” to pay for stays at the Four Seasons and for other lavish purchases, and to hire lawyers to sue Netflix. Rinsch, 47, was arrested Tuesday in West Hollywood, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. Netflix declined to comment. TriStar Pictures In 1997, director Paul Verhoeven and screenwriter Edward Neumeier, the makers of 1987’s “RoboCop,” reteamed to make “Starship Troopers,” a satirical take on Robert A. Heinlein’s 1959 novel. “Starship Troopers” takes place in a future where Earth has, for many decades, been at war with giant, intelligent insects from a distant planet. Human society, however, has devolved into a fascist state, and people have all become empty-headed, fist-pumping propaganda vehicles. Media has become bite-sized, and in-your-face. It’s no coincidence that the humans are all wearing very Nazi-like uniforms by the film’s end. “Starship Troopers” wasn’t fully appreciated in 1997. It got mostly negative reviews, and many critics didn’t seem to pick up on its more satirical elements. It was also only a modest hit, making $121 million on a
“Emilia Perez” and “Wicked” won the live action feature categories at the 75th ACE Eddie Awards, were handed out Friday night at UCLA’s Royce Hall. The event was originally slated to be held on Jan, 18 but was postponed due to the L.A. fires. In response to the fires, the event also pivoted to a heartfelt fundraising event with a “come as you are” dress code. Juliette Welfling won the best edited dramatic feature category for “Emilia Pérez” and Myron Kerstein claimed the best edited comedic feature award for “Wicked.” Accepting the award, Kerstein thanked “Wicked” director Jon M. Chu–who received Golden Eddie during the ceremony–saying “you’ve changed my life for the better and restored my hope for both the world and for cinema.” Mary Blee won the animated feature
By Beatrice Materu Journalist Mwananchi Communication Limited What you need to know: The industry loves to pretend it’s fair, but if it were a football match, men would have the whole field while women play barefoot on gravel.
