CAF Doubles WAFCON 2024 Prize Money to $1 Million

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has doubled the prize money for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 winner to $1 million. This represents a 100% increase from the previous tournament’s top prize.

CAF announced the significant boost ahead of the delayed 2024 edition scheduled for Morocco. The total prize pool for the entire competition has grown by 45%, reflecting the organization’s commitment to women’s football development across Africa.

The prize money increase comes as women’s football continues gaining momentum throughout the continent. Previous WAFCON winners received $500,000, making this year’s $1 million prize the largest in the tournament’s history.

Morocco will host the delayed 2024 tournament after the original schedule was postponed. The North African nation previously hosted WAFCON 2022, where South Africa’s Banyana Banyana claimed their first continental title.

This financial boost aligns with CAF’s broader strategy to elevate women’s football standards across Africa. The increased prize money aims to attract more investment in women’s teams and improve competition quality.

The enhanced prize structure demonstrates CAF’s recognition of women’s football’s growing popularity and commercial potential. Teams competing in Morocco will now compete for substantially higher stakes, potentially raising performance levels throughout the tournament.

The announcement signals CAF’s commitment to gender equality in African football, matching global trends toward better compensation for women’s sports achievements.
