Political Speculation Grows as VP’s Comments Spark APC-NNPP Merger Talk
Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad predicts Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and his supporters will soon join the All Progressives Congress (APC). Ahmad made this statement Thursday night on X (formerly Twitter), following Vice President Kashim Shettima’s reference to Kwankwaso as “NNPP-APC” during a public event.
The comment has sparked widespread speculation about potential political realignment between the ruling APC and Kwankwaso’s New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). Shettima’s unusual designation of the former Kano governor suggests possible behind-the-scenes negotiations or future collaboration.
Kwankwaso, who served as Kano State governor from 1999-2003 and 2011-2015, ran as NNPP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election. His party secured significant victories in Kano State, including the governorship and several legislative seats. The NNPP emerged as a major force in northern Nigeria’s political landscape.
Ahmad’s prediction carries weight given his previous role as aide to former President Muhammadu Buhari. His insider perspective on APC politics makes his assessment particularly noteworthy. However, neither Kwankwaso nor official NNPP representatives have confirmed any merger discussions.
The potential defection would significantly boost APC’s influence in Kano, Nigeria’s second-most populous state. Kwankwaso commands substantial grassroots support through his political movement known as “Kwankwasiyya.” Such a move could reshape northern Nigeria’s political dynamics ahead of future elections.
