US tech firms warn Vietnams planned law to hamper data centres, social media

U.S. tech companies have warned Vietnam’s government that a draft law to tighten rules on data protection and limit data transfers abroad would hamper social media platforms and data centre operators from growing their businesses in the country. The Southeast Asian nation with a population of 100 million is one of the world’s largest markets for Facebook and other online platforms, and is aiming to exponentially increase its data centre industry with foreign investment in coming years. The draft law “will make it challenging for tech companies, social media platforms and data centre operators to reach the customers that rely on them daily,” said Jason Oxman, who chairs the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI), a trade association representing big tech companies including Meta (META.O) Google (GOOGL.O), and data centres operator Equinix (EQIX.O). The draft

The bias machine: How Google tells you what you want to hear

“We’re at the mercy of Google.” Undecided voters in the US who turn to Google may see dramatically different views of the world – even when they’re asking the exact same question. Type in “Is Kamala Harris a good Democratic candidate”, and Google paints a rosy picture. Search results are constantly changing, but last week, the first link was a Pew Research Center poll showing that “Harris energises Democrats”. Next is an Associated Press article titled “Majority of Democrats think Kamala Harris would make a good president”, and the following links were similar. But if you’ve been hearing negative things about Harris, you might ask if she’s a “bad” Democratic candidate instead. Fundamentally, that’s an identical question, but Google’s results are far more pessimistic. “It’s been easy to forget how bad Kamala Harris is,”

FDA, GSA launch harmonisation initiative to boost industry, SMEs growth

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) have harmonised their regulatory and certification activities to expedite approval processes for businesses as well as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This initiative, approved by the Boards of both authorities, aims to reduce the cost of regulatory approvals and product certifications while also providing significant time savings. Local manufacturers will no longer have to navigate two separate processes to obtain regulatory approval from the FDA and certification from the GSA. The harmonisation involves sharing data and clarifying testing and inspection procedures, leading to lower fees and faster turnaround times. Dr Delese Mimi Darko, Chief Executive Officer of the FDA, and Prof. Alexander Dodoo, Director-General of the GSA, together emphasized that the initiative would substantially cut down costs and

Chinas sanction-hit tech industry puzzles over impact of Trump, Harris presidencies

November 1, 2024 4 minutes read Donald Trump winning the U.S. presidency next week would muddle the outlook for Chinese technology firms far more than a win for Kamala Harris, with executives saying his unpredictable style could lead as much to a reprieve for the sanction-hit industry as increased restrictions. The Republican candidate initiated a Sino-U.S. trade war during his 2017-2021 presidency by banning high-tech exports to China citing unfair trade practices and national security. Yet his combative approach coupled with his record of sudden, wide-ranging tariffs could unsettle U.S. allies and undermine any coordinated effort, Chinese tech executives said. He is tied in voter polls with his Democratic rival who executives expect to continue with the incumbent’s policy of regular, incremental changes to export controls and leveraging international alliances to slow

MPs of the Fourth Parliament Shameful start, disastrous end?

November 1, 2024 5 minutes read THE good old book, the Bible, states emphatically that God created all things under the sun and also those beneath the ocean. He then created man in His own image to have dominion over all the things that He has created. To be able to effectively take charge of all the possessions, the Creator offered man an extraordinary honour, worth and value, which He also possesses to enable man to duly represent Him so that every other creature would be a subject or subordinate to him (man). In this case, man, by this virtue, becomes the owner (the leader, if you like) of all creatures. Very exciting and inspiring. Since then and even after the fall of man in the Garden of Eden, all
