Chris Mason: How John Prescott inspired Angela Rayner and today’s Labour

John Prescott, who has died aged 86, was a figurehead of New Labour, who was also instinctively sceptical of some of its instincts. He was a bridgehead to Labour’s traditional working class roots who saw the value in, and indeed personified, championing the aspirations of the less well off. His value to Tony Blair, who swept to a landslide victory in 1997 and went on to win two further elections with Prescott at his side, was that he could reassure and lead those within Labour sceptical of its movement towards the centre. He was also a binding agent, skilled at holding the party and its sometimes warring factions together. It is not hard to see the parallels between then and now, when we once again have a plain-speaking working class

Netanyahu, Gallant issued ICC arrest warrants for war crimes: Whats next?

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant and a top Hamas leader on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. This is the first time that Netanyahu or any Israeli official has been indicted by an international court for the ongoing war on Gaza. In a decision posted online on Thursday, the ICC charged Netanyahu, Gallant and Hamas leader Mohammed Deif over Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel and Israel’s subsequent genocidal war in Gaza. Israel claimed to have killed Deif in July, however. It is unclear whether he is still alive. Effectively, the defendants are now internationally wanted suspects and ICC member states are under legal obligation to arrest them. Israeli officials slammed

He also taught me a very important lesson that I try to carry up to this day: the moral imperative of judging through evidence. BY January Makamba Today marks two years since the passing of Father Rene McGraw OSB, a Benedictine monk, who was my teacher, friend and mentor at St John’s University, a Catholic university in Minnesota, USA, where I was privileged to graduate from. Trump transition team is a ‘gathering of the most loyal people’: Reince Priebus The Powerhouse Roundtable breaks down the latest news on “This Week.”

President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for the director of national intelligence, former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, has little experience working with the nation’s spy agencies and a long track record of echoing the Russian disinformation they work to expose and to counter — a combination her critics claim should be disqualifying. Gabbard, 43, who represented Hawaii as a Democrat from 2013-2021 and ran for the party’s presidential nomination in 2020 before becoming a Republican earlier this year, has been accused of harboring sympathies for the Kremlin and parroting propaganda generated by Russia to justify its invasion of Ukraine. At the outset of the conflict, Gabbard blamed the Biden administration and NATO, claiming they had provoked Russia’s aggression by ignoring what she called its “legitimate security concerns” about Ukraine potentially becoming a member
