Ben-Gvir argued in a press conference before his Otzma Yehudit party’s weekly meeting at the Knesset in Jerusalem that Baharav-Miara had sent one of her deputies to the Israel Police’s Lahav 433 unit to request that they open a criminal investigation into

Filipinos back ICC probe of Dutertes drug war, but will it sway midterm voters?

Growing backing among Filipinos for the International Criminal Court ’s investigation into the killings that took place as part of former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte ’s war on drugs signals the waning of his populist appeal ahead of next year’s midterm elections, analysts say. Duterte, who is running next year to be mayor of Davao City once again, made headlines when he challenged ICC investigators to speed up their probe on Wednesday, telling them to “hurry up before I die” while testifying before a House committee probe into his administration’s drug war killings. He previously shocked lawmakers with testimony that he had a vigilante “death squad” that helped him carry out his drug war when he was previously mayor of Davao City. The former president is currently facing probes in

Sister disowns another after husband says your body, my choice in argument

Politics are literally dividing families in the US. Picture: Pexels

Shortly after Donald Trump snagged the US 2024 election, Neo-Nazi Nick Fuentes uttered the words that would ripple across the nation and the globe as a whole: “Your body, my choice”. This comment mirrors Trumps’ plan to ban women’s right to pregnancy termination in every state as well as being a dog whistle for rape culture as the US politics seem to be regressing when it comes to women’s rights and autonomy. In a post that went viral on Reddit, a woman shared that her own sister had disowned her after her husband said Fuentes’ now infamous phrase. “My sister freaked out when she realised my husband and I voted for Trump because she assumed we would vote for Kamala. Things got heated and my husband ended up saying, ‘your

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has obtained a preservation order from the Special Tribunal against Groen Mintirho (formerly Enviro Mobi), a company associated with former ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe. The SIU said on Monday this was in connection with alleged procurement irregularities involving the Gauteng department of agriculture, rural development and environment and the City of Ekurhuleni.    “ The order restricts Mabe from selling, leasing, transferring or otherwise dealing with specific assets, including an immovable property located at Steyn City and a Porsche 911 Carrera GTS.” The SIU said its investigation, initiated under a presidential proclamation, uncovered significant irregularities in the procurement of 200 motorised three-wheeler vehicles valued at R27.6m for a waste management project. These vehicles were intended for 58 waste pickers in Ekurhuleni but were not delivered.

Energy prices forecast to rise again in January

Getty Images Domestic energy prices are expected to edge up again in the New Year, according to consultancy Cornwall Insight. A household using a typical amount of gas and electricity will pay £1,736 a year from January, according to the forecaster, which is widely regarded for its accurate predictions. That would be a £19 a year rise, or a 1% increase, compared with the current typical annual bill of £1,717, with prices forecast to stay high for the rest of winter. Energy regulator Ofgem will announce the next official quarterly price cap on Friday, with some charities concerned about how less well-off households and pensioners will cope during the colder months. The energy cap limits the maximum price that can be charged for each unit of gas and electricity, rather

In his poem The Right to Dream (1995), Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano imagines “how the world will be in 2025”. He dreams of a better future where there is respect for nature, equality and peace. Unfortunately, 2025 is coming up and we are nowhere near fulfilling Galeano’s dream. In fact, we increasingly find ourselves in a situation where the survival of human civilisation is at stake. This year alone, millions of people worldwide experienced extreme climate events, groundbreaking temperatures, genocide, and deadly exposure to toxic chemicals and pollution leading to mass death, injury, displacement, poverty, and trauma. While the near future seems bleak, our education systems are nowhere near providing children with the right tools and knowledge to help them understand it. Schools continue to be battlegrounds for the building

Companies Are Struggling To Teach Employees How To Do Their Jobs

The first day at a new job is always weird. You have no idea what you’re supposed to be doing, who to talk to, or how to even really be. The theory is that over time you get the hang of it — but lots of workers make it months into their jobs and feel like they’re still kind of winging it. It’s not that they don’t want to learn; it’s that nobody’s teaching them. In many pockets of corporate America, on-the-job training mostly amounts to “figure it out.” Workers are struggling to get a handle on their jobs, and this failure falls on everyone — companies, managers, human-resources departments, and, in some cases, the workers themselves. You don’t need to look far to find evidence that people don’t feel

FILE - A view shows water collected at the dam within the Ruzizi I hydroelectric plant in Bukavu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo

November 18, 2024 Written by VOA FILE – A view shows water collected at the dam within the Ruzizi I hydroelectric plant in Bukavu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo A tide of plastic waste flowing into a major hydroelectric dam in eastern Congo is causing regular power cuts in several major cities, creating a challenge that local authorities are trying to solve. The Ruzizi dam located at the south end of Lake Kivu, which borders Rwanda, supplies the city of Bukavu and others with electricity and the power outages are hurting local businesses. The problem is linked to the growing use of plastics coupled with a lack of waste collection in the region. Heavy rainfall causes waste to flow down from the mountainous terrain to the lake, where it collects
