Calling for charges against Yoon over his abuse of power, the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials (CIO) said in a statement on Thursday: “We have decided to request the Seoul Central District Prosecution Office to charge [Yoon] as the mastermind behind the insurrection [on December 3].” Although the CIO has the authority to investigate corruption and abuse of power cases involving high-ranking officials, it cannot directly file charges, which is the sole responsibility of state prosecutors. After a failed attempt to arrest Yoon on January 3, the CIO succeeded in taking him into custody on January 15 during

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu calls for validation of Free SHS beneficiary data

Ghana’s newly appointed Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has called for the validation of data on the number of beneficiaries of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme as a critical first step in his tenure. Speaking during his maiden visit to the Ministry of Education on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, shortly after his swearing-in by President John Dramani Mahama, Minister Iddrisu emphasised the need for accurate data to inform policy decisions and foster accountability. “My research indicates that the number stands at no more than 3.9 million students between 2017 and 2023. However, there are public claims and even parliamentary records suggesting 5.1 million beneficiaries. We need to validate this data to ensure clarity and accountability,” he stated. The Minister clarified that the objective of his call was

So we’re pretty sure the sleek Zeekr 007 GT shooting brake will have no trouble finding fans. It’s set to debut in Europe in the second quarter of 2025, and while it could sell on looks alone, its range and charging performance put it at the top of its class. The name will change for Europe

Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials says president sought to ‘disrupt the constitutional order’. South Korea’s anticorruption agency has recommended that President Yoon Suk-yeol be charged with insurrection and abuse of power following a probe into the impeached leader’s short-lived martial law declaration. The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) said on Thursday that it requested prosecutors to file the charges after finding that Yoon had suspended civil rule with “the intent to exclude state authority or disrupt the constitutional order”. Following the CIO’s transfer of the case, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office will have 11 days to decide whether to charge Yoon and send him to trial. Yoon, who has been suspended from his duties since a December 14 impeachment vote by the National Assembly, was arrested

What the international community expects is win-win cooperation. Provoking bloc confrontation is not only against the trend of the times but also dangerous. By ZHANG GUOPING JANUARY 23, 2025 01:53 Chinese President Xi Jinping delivers a speech during the National Day reception on the eve of the 75th founding anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China September 30, 2024. (photo credit: REUTERS/FLORENCE LO) Recently, a letter published in The Jerusalem Post deliberately distorted UNGA Resolution 2758, stirring up the so-called “Taiwan sovereignty” and “Taiwan democracy” narratives. These views severely challenged China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, subverted international justice and conscience, and defied the post-war international order. They are both absurd and dangerous. First, Taiwan has no so-called sovereignty. There is

The family of a Japanese national who was just 13 when she was abducted by North Korean agents in 1977 have called on US President Donald Trump to intervene with Pyongyang and bring her and other abductees home – but experts say their wish may remain unfulfilled due to complex geopolitical realities. In a statement released on Tuesday, soon after Trump was sworn into office in Washington, 88-year-old Sakie Yokota said she hoped the president could use his connections with North Korea ’s leader Kim Jong-un to arrange the release of her daughter Megumi. “I want President Trump to urge North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to realise the rescue and return of the abduction victims,” Yokota said. “Mr Trump is a person who can talk with Mr Kim Jong-un.” The

In a sworn affidavit obtained by Democrats on the Senate Armed Services Committee, the former sister-in-law of defense secretary nominee Pete Hegseth said that Hegseth’s ex-wife Samantha told her she “once hid in her closet from Hegseth because she feared for her personal safety” in the home she shared with Hegseth during their marriage. The affidavit, which details concerns about allegedly abusive behavior by Hegseth against Samantha, who was Hegseth’s second wife, came from Danielle Hegseth, who was previously married to Hegseth’s brother. News of the affidavit was first reported by NBC News, which reported that Samantha refuted many of the claims in the affidavit in a statement to NBC. “There was no physical abuse in my marriage. This is the only further statement I will make to you, I

Tesla’s ‘Brand Value’ Plummeted By $15 Billion In 2024: Report

Tesla’s ‘Brand Value’ Plummeted By Billion In 2024: Report

Tesla fell behind Toyota and Mercedes-Benz in “brand value,” a metric calculated by research and consulting firm Brand Finance. This metric appears to consider more of Tesla’s real-world performance and less of what the automaker has promised for the future. Its recommendation and consideration scores also fell sharply due to a lack of new models and CEO Elon Musk’s culture wars.  Tesla’s trillion-dollar stock market valuation may feel like a badge of honor for fans and investors. Still, that figure is more a reflection of its artificial intelligence and robotics ambitions. A different metric tells a far less glamorous story. The automaker’s brand value has nosedived for consecutive years, falling to $43 billion at the start of this year compared to $58.3 billion a year ago, CNBC reported, citing data from
