Penaud scores six, Dupont shines as French clubs dominate Champions Cup

Damian Penaud scored a tournament record six tries as Bordeaux-Begles hammered the Sharks, while Antoine Dupont shone as Toulouse thrashed Leicester in Champions Cup action on Sunday. Wales coach Warren Gatland will no doubt have been an interested, if slightly apprehensive, spectator as the two French teams — packed with the core of the France team — were ruthless in the two matches that came just 12 days before Les Bleus open their Six Nations campaign against the stuttering Welsh in Paris. Penaud’s hatful of tries in the 66-12 victory saw Bordeaux secure top spot in Pool 1 with 20 points from a maximum of 20, and home advantage in the next round in April. Dupont’s France back-up Maxime Lucu, Ugo Boniface, Yoram Moefana and Jacques Nguimbous all added tries

Wirtz has Leverkusen on Bayerns heels to keep repeat title dream alive

Bayer Leverkusen’s German midfielder Florian Wirtz (L) and Moenchengladbach’s German midfielder Julian Weigl vie for the ball during the German first division Bundesliga football match between Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Moenchengladbach in Leverkusen, western Germany, on January 18, 2025.

Florian Wirtz scored twice as Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen beat Borussia Moenchengladbach 3-1 on Saturday to stay four points behind leaders Bayern Munich. Bayern had gone seven clear with a 3-2 win over Wolfsburg earlier on in the day, throwing down the gauntlet but Leverkusen were dominant and controlled, notching their 11th straight win in all competitions. “We’re right in the middle of a title fight again — you can dream a little bit,” Wirtz told Sky Germany. With 32 minutes gone, Leverkusen enforcer Granit Xhaka won the ball in midfield and fed Wirtz, who beat a defender and slotted calmly home. When Leverkusen won a penalty for handball midway through the second half, the 21-year-old Wirtz stepped up and converted. Patrik Schick latched onto a Wirtz pass to score

Five-star Barca smash Real Madrid to win Spanish Super Cup

Barcelona hammered rivals Real Madrid 5-2 in a wild Spanish Super Cup Clasico final in Saudi Arabia on Sunday to win the first trophy of the Hansi Flick era. The electric Kylian Mbappe sent Madrid ahead but a dominant Barcelona hit five in response before their goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was sent off in the second half. Madrid were hoping to avenge their 4-0 defeat by Barcelona in October’s La Liga Clasico but instead were left battered and bruised by their arch-rivals in Jeddah. After Mbappe’s opener, Lamine Yamal levelled and Robert Lewandowski sent Barcelona ahead from the penalty spot, with Raphinha bagging a brace and Alejandro Balde also on target. Rodrygo Goes pulled one back for Madrid with a free-kick but they could not capitalise further on their numerical advantage

Brilliant feeling as Cape Town shock Orlando Pirates

Cape Town City goalkeeper Darren Keet could not contain his joy on Wednesday after a shock 1-0 home win over South African Premiership title hopefuls Orlando Pirates. Venezuelan Darwin Gonzalez scored the match-winner on 74 minutes, soon after Patrick Maswanganyi missed a penalty for the visitors in front of a 22,000 crowd. “On social media they were saying this was a warm-up match for Pirates before they play in the CAF Champions League at the weekend,” former South Africa international Keet told reporters. “Pirates supporters were so confident — they believed this match would be a walkover for them. It is a brilliant feeling to have beaten them.” Victory completed a double for Cape Town over the biggest crowd pullers in the country — Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs — within

Newcastle win at Arsenal to put one foot in League Cup final

Newcastle took a giant stride towards the League Cup final as goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon earned a 2-0 semi-final, first leg lead at Arsenal on Tuesday. The Magpies have never previously won the competition and have had to wait since 1969 to celebrate any major trophy. But in Isak they have the form striker in England right now and he rifled home the opener then helped tee up the second for Gordon. Arsenal have a mountain to climb when the sides meet for the second leg on February 5 if they are to progress to meet either Tottenham or Liverpool in the final. The importance of silverware to both clubs was reflected in the line-ups as Mikel Arteta and Eddie Howe named their strongest available teams. Arteta

Ranieris Roma claim derby honours against Lazio

Roma triumphed 2-0 against local rivals Lazio on Sunday to give Claudio Ranieri his biggest win since the veteran coach took charge of his boyhood club for the third time. Lorenzo Pellegrini and Alexis Saelemaekers netted the goals in eight first-half minutes which gave Roma the points in a fraught atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Ranieri’s team are up to 10th on 23 points, still 12 points behind Lazio who sit in the final Champions League spot but now with some breathing space from the relegation zone. Six points separate Roma from Lecce, who sit just inside the bottom three and drew 0-0 with Genoa earlier on Sunday, as Ranieri slowly gets the capital club going back in the right direction. Roma were in such disarray when the

Fernandes sent off as Man Utd crash at Wolves, troubled Man City held by Everton

Bruno Fernandes was sent off as Manchester United crashed to an embarrassing 2-0 defeat at lowly Wolves, while Erling Haaland missed a penalty as crisis-torn Manchester City failed to end their dismal run with a 1-1 draw against Everton on Thursday. United suffered a third successive loss in all competitions to leave new boss Ruben Amorim with five defeats in his 10 games since replacing the sacked Erik ten Hag. Fernandes was dismissed two minutes into the second half at Molineux for a second booking after fouling Nelson Semedo. United’s 10 men cracked in the 58th minute when Matheus Cunha’s corner went straight in as keeper Andre Onana flapped under pressure from Matt Doherty and Santiago Bueno. Hwang Hee-chan compounded Amorim’s misery when he tapped in with just seconds left.

Jota rescues 10-man Liverpool in Fulham draw, Arsenal frustrated

Diogo Jota rescued Liverpool as the Premier League leaders recovered from Andy Robertson’s early red card to snatch a 2-2 draw with Fulham, while Arsenal’s title challenge was dented by a goalless stalemate against Everton on Saturday. With just four minutes left at Anfield, Arne Slot’s side were in danger of losing for just the second time in 15 top-flight games this season. But Jota grabbed a valuable equaliser as Liverpool extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 19 matches since a loss to Nottingham Forest in September. With last weekend’s Merseyside derby at Everton postponed by severe weather, Liverpool have now gone two league games without a win following their 3-3 draw at Newcastle. The Reds sit five points clear of second-placed Chelsea, who can close the gap

South Africa send Wales crashing to 87-year low in Test rout

World champions South Africa hammered Wales 45-12 in Cardiff on Saturday to condemn Warren Gatland’s team to a 12th consecutive Test defeat and a winless calendar year for the first time since 1937. The Springboks were dominant throughout at the Principality Stadium, scoring seven tries to two in a relentless display that matched attacking accuracy with defensive brutality and set-piece mastery. The result meant the Boks, who wrapped up the Rugby Championship title this year, finish their season with 11 victories from 13 Tests, having used a whopping 52 players and scoring 57 tries. “The first two games we weren’t happy, there was so much we could have done better,” Springbok captain Siya Kolisi told TNT Sports of opening November victories over Scotland and England. “Results are important but it’s

Eternal Nadal leaves legacy as he retires from tennis

Rafael Nadal said early Wednesday he had left a sporting and personal ‘legacy’ after retiring from professional tennis, as tributes flooded in for the 22-time Grand Slam winner. The 38-year-old’s glittering and historic career came to a close as Netherlands defeated Spain in the Davis Cup and Nadal gave an emotional speech that ran over 10 minutes long to more than 10,000 fans in Malaga. After 23 years in the game and many struggles with injury, Nadal retires as the second-most successful men’s singles player of all time. “I leave with the peace of mind that I have left a legacy, which I really feel is not just a sporting one but a personal one,” Nadal said at his retirement ceremony. “I understand that the love I have received, if

Minnows Botswana hold Egypt to qualify with Mozambique, Tanzania

A scrappy goal by Omaatla Kebatho proved priceless as it gave minnows Botswana a shock 1-1 draw away to seven-time champions Egypt on Tuesday, and 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification. Mozambique won 2-1 in Guinea-Bissau and hosts Tanzania edged Guinea 1-0 to also secure places at the biennial African football showpiece, which Morocco will stage from December 21 next year. The other 21 places had been taken before the final 13 qualifiers were played on Tuesday, and four-time winners Ghana will be the shock absentees after finishing last in Group F. Needing a point to ensure qualification from Group C, Botswana seemingly stood little chance of achieving that goal in Cairo against Egypt, 110 places higher in the world rankings. Although lacking resting captain Mohamed Salah, already-qualified Egypt would

Sudan, Benin qualify, heartbreak for Rwanda after shocking Nigeria

War-torn Sudan and Benin qualified on Monday for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, while there was heartbreak for Rwanda as they shocked Nigeria 2-1 only to lose out. Sudan drew 0-0 with Group F winners Angola in Benghazi to finish runners-up and claim the second qualifying place. The Sudanese finished with eight points, one more than Niger, who upset depleted former champions Ghana 2-1 in Accra. It was even closer in Group D with Benin, who held Libya 0-0 in Tripoli, pipping Rwanda on head-to-head records after both finished with eight points, three less than table-toppers Nigeria. Benin owe their place in Morocco from December 21 next year to a superior goal difference. Last month, they trounced Rwanda 3-0 at home and lost 2-1 away. Having changed eight of

Sinner sweeps past Fritz to win ATP Finals

Jannik Sinner won the ATP Finals on Sunday after beating Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 to claim his first title at the season-ending event in Turin. Italian Sinner’s triumph on home soil was the latest moment of glory in a near-perfect year in which the 23-year-old won eight tournaments, including his debut Grand Slam victories at the Australian and US Opens. “It’s amazing, it’s my first title in Italy and it means so much to me,” said Sinner. “It’s something very special. I just tried to understand what works best for each opponent, trying to play my best possible tennis. That was the key. “It was a very high level tournament from my side. At times, I couldn’t have played better, so I am very happy.” World number one Sinner again

Netherlands into Nations League quarter-finals as Germany hit seven

Netherlands outclassed Hungary with a 4-0 victory in their winner-takes-all Nations League encounter on Saturday while Germany hammered Bosnia and Hercegovina 7-0. Netherlands and Hungary went into the match tied on five points each and with the winner set to join Germany in ensuring their progress from Group A3 to the quarter-finals. First-half penalties by Wout Weghorst and Cody Gakpo sent the Oranje on their way, before Denzel Dumfries and Teun Koopmeiners made the game safe in the second period. The match at the Johan Cruyff Arena was briefly interrupted in the seventh minute following a medical emergency on the Hungarian bench. The referee stopped play for some 10 minutes while Hungary’s assistant coach Adam Szalai received treatment, shielded from view by huddled players and staff members, as well as

Nigeria book place at Africa Cup of Nations

A late equaliser from Victor Osimhen stamped Nigeria’s ticket for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Thursday while Tunisia also booked their place with a 3-2 win over Madagascar. In spite of not playing on Thursday, other results also saw South Africa, Gabon and Uganda secure places at the 24-nation showcase of African football, which kicks off in Morocco on December 21 next year. Sudan missed a chance to qualify after a shock 4-0 loss to Niger — a result which offered a glimmer of hope to Ghana ahead of a must-win match in Angola on Friday. Nigeria were trailing against Benin in Group D before reigning African Footballer of the Year Osimhen equalised nine minutes from time to secure a 1-1 draw in Abidjan. Mohamed Tijani had put Benin
