Jonathan Allegedly Plotted My Removal as Borno Governor, Says VP Shettima
Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima accused former President Goodluck Jonathan of plotting to remove him from office during his tenure as Borno State Governor. Shettima made these allegations Thursday in Abuja during a public address.
The Vice President claimed Jonathan’s administration orchestrated a systematic campaign against his governorship between 2011 and 2015. Shettima allegedly faced pressure from federal authorities who questioned his leadership during Borno’s security crisis under Boko Haram insurgency.
“They wanted me out because I refused to compromise on security matters,” Shettima reportedly stated. He alleged that Jonathan’s government used federal agencies to investigate his administration’s finances and operations.
The former Borno Governor claimed the plot intensified after he criticized the federal government’s handling of the northeastern security situation. Shettima alleged that Jonathan’s allies within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) pressured him to switch political allegiances or face removal proceedings.
These revelations surface amid ongoing political tensions between Nigeria’s current All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership and former PDP officials. Shettima served as Borno Governor from 2011 to 2019 before becoming Vice President under President Bola Tinubu in 2023.
Jonathan’s representatives have not immediately responded to these allegations. The former President previously faced criticism over his administration’s handling of the Boko Haram crisis that devastated northeastern Nigeria during his presidency from 2010 to 2015.
