Police Arrest Suspect in Queen Mother’s Fatal Shooting at Naming Ceremony

Accra Regional Police have arrested a 21-year-old man allegedly connected to the fatal shooting of a queen mother during a naming ceremony in Gbawe Zero. The arrest comes following the June 19, 2025 incident that shocked the suburban Accra community.

The victim, Pearl Naa Dodoowa Whitaker, 33, served as Naa Agyinafo I of Papase before her tragic death. Police reports indicate she was shot at close range during the traditional ceremony, though specific details about the weapon and circumstances remain under investigation.

The suspect’s identity has not been publicly released as investigations continue. Authorities have not disclosed the motive behind the alleged attack or whether the shooting was targeted specifically at the queen mother.

The incident occurred in Gbawe Zero, a suburb of Accra, during what should have been a celebratory naming ceremony for a newborn. Such traditional events typically draw large community gatherings, making the violence particularly disturbing for residents.

Queen mothers hold significant cultural authority in Ghanaian communities, serving as advisors and playing crucial roles in traditional governance. The loss of Naa Agyinafo I represents both a personal tragedy and a blow to local traditional leadership.

Police investigations remain ongoing as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the shooting. The arrest marks a significant development in the case that has gripped the Gbawe community.
