VRA Wins Top Honor at 7th Africa Procurement Summit in Lagos

VRA Sets New Standard for African Public Procurement Excellence

The Volta River Authority (VRA) claimed top honors at Africa’s premier procurement summit, establishing itself as the continent’s leading public sector buyer. Ghana’s state-owned power utility won recognition at the 7th Africa Procurement and Supply Chain Summit & Awards 2025 in Lagos, Nigeria.

The three-day event ran from July 3-5, 2025, bringing together procurement professionals from across Africa’s 54 nations. VRA’s victory highlights Ghana’s growing influence in public sector procurement reform and transparency initiatives.

The summit evaluated participants on procurement efficiency, cost management, supplier diversity, and digital transformation efforts. VRA’s recognition comes as African governments face mounting pressure to modernize their buying processes and eliminate corruption in public spending.

Ghana’s power sector has undergone significant procurement reforms since 2020, with VRA leading digital adoption initiatives. The authority manages approximately $2.8 billion in annual procurement activities, covering everything from power generation equipment to infrastructure development projects.

The Lagos summit featured 47 African procurement agencies competing across 12 categories. VRA’s win positions Ghana as a regional leader in public sector procurement best practices, potentially attracting international development funding and private sector partnerships.

This recognition arrives as African nations collectively spend over $180 billion annually on public procurement, representing roughly 15% of the continent’s total GDP. VRA’s success demonstrates how strategic procurement reforms can drive economic development and improve public service delivery across Africa.
