THE Oshakati Town Council on Tuesday re-elected Leonard Hango as the town’s mayor for the fourth time, while Councillor Puyeipawa Elifas retained her position as deputy mayor. Hofeni Mutota, Maria Mutumbulwa, and Ruusa Frans also remain members of the management committee, while Councillors Jerobeam Ndaamohamba and Pinehas Aluvilu continue as ordinary councillors. Oshakati Magistrate Mozay Jansen presided over the election.
In his acceptance speech, Hango said his re-election represents not just a continuation but a reaffirmation of their collective vision for Oshakati, a vision grounded in growth, unity, and service.
According to Hango, the council has achieved significant milestones this year alone, each reflecting their shared commitment to a better Oshakati. “Council has embarked on an ambitious infrastructure development plan, improving our road networks and infrastructure development in our town,” he said.
He added that they are making considerable efforts to keep Oshakati clean, with the goal of becoming the cleanest local authority in Namibia. To this end, schools are encouraged to participate in cleaning campaigns to educate children on the importance of a clean environment.
Hango also highlighted that land and affordable housing remain a cornerstone of their agenda, with the formalization of Oshakati’s informal settlements as a core project under the Planning and Properties Department. Through consultations with the Uukwambi Traditional Authority and the Oshana Regional Council, Oshakati has expanded its town boundaries to incorporate Uukwaangula settlement, which is now officially called “Uukwaangula Township.”
Hango said that construction of new access gravel roads to Onawa from the Okandjengedi traffic lights is near completion. Additionally, the construction of sewer reticulation services at Evululuko is also nearing completion, as is the upgrading of the MR111 and MR92 intersection and construction of an access road to Dr. Frans Aupa Indongo Open Market, which is 90% complete.
The council is also upgrading streets in parts of Oshakati East and West and renovating community centres in Uupindi South and Evululuko at Omangendu. Moreover, stormwater channel construction and bulk water services in Ompumbu Township are underway.
Hango emphasized that they are currently piloting the use of prepaid water meters in some parts of Oshakati to assess their effectiveness before potentially expanding the project town-wide.
