Lady Gaga set the theatrical tone for the night when, accompanied by umbrella-wielding dancers, she completed four outfit changes before she even reached the end of the red carpet. Billy Porter followed suit with an Ancient Greece-inspired entrance, wearing a gold winged bodysuit and 24-karat headpiece, while being carried on a litter. On the topic of transportation, Kacey Musgraves went full Barbie dreamworld, rocking up in the perfect life-size accessory – a pink convertible.
The actor brought an eerily lifelike copy of his own head with him onto the red carpet to offset his high-neck gown designed by Alessandro Michele. The move was of course a nod to Gucci’s autumn/winter 2018 collection, where model Unia Pakhomova pulled off a similar accessory based on her own features. Even more campily surreal? When the head began doing the rounds inside the Met Gala itself, with everyone from the Jenner sisters to Salma Hayek cosying up to it over the course of the night.
How Famous Is Your Family?
The not-so red carpet played host to a number of sister acts on the night – Kendall and Kylie Jenner arrived together (in similar showgirl-esque outfits, which fast invited a myriad of memes on Twitter) and then caught up with Kris Jenner, Corey Gamble, Kim Kardashian, Kanye West and Travis Scott for a family photo opp. The Olsen twins wore matching vintage Chanel leather looks, while Dakota Johnson and her sister Grace both opted for metallic gowns.
Kardashian-West appeared on the red carpet in a custom gown by Thierry Mugler, his first piece for the House of Mugler in more than 20 years. The beaded look was inspired by the thought of the quintessential California girl stepping directly out of the ocean – and took more than eight months to make. The mogul also posted images of Sophia Loren in her iconic wet dress from the 1957 film Boy on a Dolphin to her Instagram stories – another key reference. As for husband Kanye West? He donned a zip-up Dickies jacket inspired by World War II uniforms that retails for about £30.
Couple Goals
It wasn’t only sister duos serving up double acts during the arrivals. There were plenty of red-carpet couple moments too – from Kim Kardashian and Kanye West and Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott, to Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian, A-Rod and J.Lo, and Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas. Even Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas were there – in lieu, it seems, of a honeymoon following their Las Vegas nuptials last week.
Zendaya Gave Us A Real Fairytale Moment
Zendaya offered the most magical moment of the night, transforming into a real-life Cinderella with her very own fairy godmother (and stylist) Law Roach, who, with a wave of a wand, made her fit-for-a-princess Tommy Hilfiger gown light up from top-to-toe. Committing to the character, she even left behind a glass slipper on the red carpet for maximum fairytale effect.
Celine Dion Misunderstood The Theme In The Most Celine Dion Way Possible
The singer cheerfully told reporters that at first she had misinterpreted “Camp: Notes on Fashion” – envisioning a mass sleep over in the woods. Thankfully, Oscar de la Renta stepped in, designing a beaded, vampy gown for the songstress inspired by Judy Garland’s role as a vaudeville performer in the 1941 film Ziegfield Girl.
Cardi B Wore The Evening’s Most Memeable Gown
In a nod to the Met Gala’s theme, this year’s red carpet was in fact pink – until Cardi B showed up, that is, and covered nearly all of it with her oxblood look. The Grammy winner donned a custom Thom Browne gown with a train that measured nearly a dozen feet across and required a team of five to lift it up the Met’s grand staircase. Lining the bottom of the dress? More than 30,000 coque feathers. Let the comparison to Rihanna’s similarly vast Guo Pei gown in 2015 commence.
Katy Perry Sings “Chandelier” Wearing A Chandelier
You’d be hard pressed to have missed Katy Perry’s unsurprisingly statement light-up ensemble as she took to the red carpet, but – in case anyone hadn’t got the interior inspiration behind her outfit – she gave an impromptu performance of Sia’s “Chandelier”. And yes, she did later change into a burger costume.

Even The Pinstripes Were Stand-Out
Lena Waithe sought to pay tribute to the pioneers of camp in her take on the theme, wearing a jacket with the words “Black Drag Queens Invented Camp” on the back. Zoom in closer and you’ll notice that the buttons are in fact pictures of drag and camp icons, while lyrics – from songs such as Diana Ross’s “I’m Coming Out” and Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” – make up the pinstripe design.
Rihanna’s Red-Carpet Commentary
She might have been the most notable absentee of the night, but RiRi still had her (brief) say on the Met Gala red-carpet analysis by sharing a photograph of host Anna Wintour – in a Chanel crystal-covered gown – as the proceedings got underway on Instagram, with the caption “best dressed”.
