Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a federal holiday in the United States to honor the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The holiday was established in 1986 and was the third national holiday to be celebrated by the United States Congress. In 1983, a bill that would designate the third Monday in January as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, was proposed by Congressman James Edward Ruppenthal, but it died in the House Committee on Post Office and Civil Service. This bill, along with other bills honoring other civil rights figures, were included in the Bipartisan Bill H.R. 1414, which was passed by the House on May 22, 1986 and by the Senate on October 16, 1986 and was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. The holiday was first observed on January 20, 1986, as part of a joint congressional resolution.

This year, Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on January 17, 2022. The holiday celebrates the civil rights leader’s life and legacy, but also reminds us to celebrate the lives and legacies of others who have fought for equality, justice, and freedom.

Every year on January 17th, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is marked by a series of events in many states across the country.
